Overview:
The BNF 79 aims to provide prescribers, pharmacists and other health professionals with the latest information on drug use. The BNF contains important information on drug selection, prescription, distribution and administration. Prescription drugs are generally covered in the UK and those that are considered less suitable for prescription are clearly identified. There is little or no information about medicines purchased by the public. Information on medicines is obtained from manufacturers’ product literature, medical and pharmaceutical literature, UK health departments, regulatory authorities and professional bodies. The advice is made up of clinical literature and, as far as possible, reflects the evaluation of evidence from a variety of sources. The BNF also takes into account authoritative national guidelines and emerging security concerns. In addition, the editorial team seeks advice from a therapist on all treatments. Ensures that BNF recommendations are relevant in practice. The BNF is designed as a digest for quick reference and may not always contain all the information needed to suggest and distribute. Also, areas such as maternity, malignant disease, and anaesthesia are given less detail because it is expected that therapists will have access to knowledgeable and literate people.
Similarly, in very rare cases there is little or no information on medications. BNF for children should be consulted for detailed information on drug use in children. BNF should be interpreted in the light of professional knowledge and should be supplemented as required with reference to special publications and product literature. Information is also available from Medicine Information Services, see Medicine Information Services (see inside front cover).
BNF is a joint publication of the British Medical Association and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. It is published under the auspices of a joint formulary committee comprising two professional bodies, the UK Health Department, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, and a national guideline producer. The Dental Advisory Group oversees the preparation of advice on dental and oral drug management. The group includes representatives from the British Dental Association and the UK Health Department. The Nurse Prescription Advisory Group provides advice on nursing-related materials and includes representatives from different parts of nursing.
