Now before that we move on to sharing the free PDF download of Examination PAEDIATRICS: A Guide to Paediatric Training PDF with you, here are a few important details regarding this book which you might be interested.
The first edition of this book was written 25 years ago, to assist candidates preparing for the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Part 1) Examination in Paediatrics, or for the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (Part 2) Examination in Paediatrics (now the MRCPCH), inspired by Talley and O’Connor’s book Examination Medicine.
Back in 1992 there was no limit to the number of attempts one could have to pass the FRACP examination. Several of my senior colleagues had passed the clinical exam on their tenth attempt; clinically they were all exceptional. Over the years the format of the exam has changed, and in 2017 the number of attempts is now limited to three for the clinical exam, increasing the focus on passing the first time. This book is designed for that goal. This edition has been extensively expanded to try to keep up with the advances in medical knowledge, which accelerate each year. Each previous long case has been updated, five new ones added, including three neurocutaneous syndromes (NF1, TSC and SWS), hypopituitarism and Rett syndrome.
Each previous short case has been updated, and eight new ones added including lymphadenopathy, ataxia, nystagmus, proptosis, and body asymmetry. There are new expanded sections of previous chapters; in particular the cardiology chapter has been improved and now is profusely illustrated with over 50 colour images. There are many new mnemonics. In each edition I have stressed this is not the ‘Einstein Encyclopaedia of Paediatrics’; its purpose is to make the hurdle of any paediatric examination easier to clear. In the words of Sir Karl Popper, the great philosopher of science: ‘All life is problem solving’. Don’t panic! Good luck!
