Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
No one seriously expects to learn a foreign language just from reading a book, but if you’ve had formal training in German and need a quick refresher for, say, a business trip, this book is a good resource. It not only provides the memory jogging you seek but also gives a taste of colloquial German that a college course might omit. The book has reminders about German’s many “false friends”—words that are spelled the same in German and English but have much different meanings (e.g., also, fast, Gift, Kind), and it includes practical information, such as how to get medical help or the fact that museums typically are closed on Mondays.
I bought this used so it’s worn out looking with writing from the previous owner. It’s still completely useful though and the writing was in pencil. This arrived quicker the I expected. There’s lots of good info that’s easy to understand. There’s things like word searches that make it fun while testing your knowledge. Good learning tool.
This book really is a must-have. It gives lots of details that are extremely useful and tells you things about German words that otherwise you wouldn’t know. The authors make sure you don’t embarrass yourself by saying the wrong thing. It’s the total package; there’s a lot packed into this book and all of it is useful. Written in engaging language, the book really does teach you how to speak German.
I don t think this book was written for dummies. It is rather arcane in its approach and not simple to use. I suggest Duolingo online
This is a very helpful book. The best part is the CD. Without the CD, it is hard to figure out how to pronounce the words. The material is very well organized. The subject material is varied and useful. I feel like when I am finished with the book,I will be able to have short conversations with German people. I like the games and puzzle too. It makes learning more fun. I recommend this book to any one who wants to converse in German. It is an excellent beginning!I purchased the book from AmaZon. I like the ease that you can order from Amazon. I also like the fact you can obtain used books and save a little money.
The series….for dummies seems to be a safe choice for beginners or intremediates. The bright point on this point is the explication on verb, in different settting, tense or the grammar section, though not complete but succesfully introduces this topic for future studies.you can also download the accompanying audio, an issue that plagues certain digital edition.
CD a wonderful help. Helped to refresh what I learned in high school 50+ years ago
A waste of money. I speak some German having lived there for a little bit. I picked this over other books because of the cd.Not well organized no real lessons. It is the same with the Dummies Japanese book. A fairly useless book. Just really phrases with no seeming relationship to each other the chapters don’t build on each other. No lessons to help you get the words and phrases into your head.I would never buy another dummies book again. The changing from pc to mac and the snow lepoard books were no help to me either.I believe my copy was an earlier edition but I doubt this is better. The idiot series is much better. This book is the book I would buy now.German Made Simple: Learn to speak and understand German quickly and easilyHas all you want.
I haven’t had much time to read thoroughly, except the preface and dipping in and out of the book.I have just spent two weeks in Germany and found this very helpful in being able to understand some of the language. This does not pretend to teach you German but helps you to learn the language. There are some very useful tips which helped me avoid referring to ‘the mist over the lake’. I was bought, as a Christmas present a few years ago, the Rosetta Stone language course to level 3. I find this book much more helpful and useful.I will continue to use this book as my German definitely needs improvement and being in Kindle format means I can use it on my Kindle and iPad mini when away from home.
This is a really helpful guide albeit that it seems to be directed at American readers. This presents no real problems and the guide goes much deeper than the GCSE guides. To me the biggest advantage of the book as compared with many others is the presentation of a line of German together with it’s translation into English AND a pronunciation guide to the line. This pronunciation guide is very helpful. There is also a CD with the book which also helps with spoken German. The book arrived promptly from Amazon.
Only so far through this book. Really finding it useful – its a good back up to other methods of learning Deutch.I have been trying to learn German for 3 years and am struggling. But this book seems to be making a break through with me. I would recommend it.
Helpful for when I was on holiday in Germany in August 2015. It reminded me of what German I already knew.
the dummies series are always good, and predictable with their clarity. very happy with this as a way to start learning german.
